The public deserve a full-time fire chief, say Fire Brigades Union
7:00pm Wednesday 14th August 2013 in Devon
Devon and Somerset firefighters have appealed to councillors over the decision to allow fire chief Lee Howell to go part-time in order to accept a second job as a fire advisor for the Welsh Government.
Representatives from the Fire Brigades Union have said the move is outrageous, stressing that both the public and firefighters deserve a full-time fire chief at this time of unprecedented cuts.
However, Lee Howell said the change will benefit the fire service, with the additional work bringing in £40,000 of additional income.
"Public sector organisations sharing chief executives and senior officers is not unusual in local government.” He said.
“Many Chief Fire Officers have additional responsibilities outside of their role in running the Fire Service.”
