Arson attack on disabled Devon woman's car

Mid Devon Star: Arson attack on disabled Devon woman's car Arson attack on disabled Devon woman's car

A disabled woman from Plymouth has been left without transport following a callous arson attack on her car.

The victim’s Motability car, which she has described as her ‘lifeline’, was left destroyed in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 68-year-old owner of the green Ford Fiesta found that it had been covered with petrol and set alight between 12.30 and 12.45am on January 6 outside her home in Taunton Avenue, Whitleigh.

Police are appealing for the public’s help in tracing the suspects.

Two men were seen to approach the car, one covered it in petrol and the second suspect lit an object and threw it at the car, causing it to ignite.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw suspicious vehicles in the area of Taunton Avenue around the time. They also want residents to check their bins and gardens for any suspicious items.

DC Jason Bryant said: “The victim is extremely limited in her mobility and is devastated her vehicle has been completely destroyed. Her car was her way of transport and getting out and about, now she is worried she will be confined to her home.

“The Motability company are reluctant to provide another car because of the risk and this car was her lifeline.”

City police are stepping up high-visibility patrols in the area and the neighbourhood team have been visiting residents with reassurance visits.

The two suspects are described as – a white male of chunky build with a round belly, wearing a dark tracksuit with a baseball cap underneath the hood of the tracksuit. The second suspect is described as a white male, of slim build with a black hood over his head and a matching tracksuit top and bottoms.

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting crime ref. EL/13/73 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
