A SERIES of thefts and attempted burglaries in Uffculme has led to a police investigation after claims the suspect was impersonating a police officer.

The incidents took place earlier this week around 8pm on Tuesday, July 5, at a number of properties in Culm Haven.

According to Devon and Cornwall Police, residents discovered a man attempting to enter their home through the rear door on two occasions.

When challenged about their intrusion, the suspect claimed to be a police officer before leaving the property.

The suspect was caught leaving a property on another occasion that night.

Police attending the properties and conducted searches to the houses. During the search, they discovered one person had his wallet stolen that contained £50.

The suspect is said to be tall, thin and wearing a dark/navy baseball cap with a white logo on the front. They are aged around 30-40.

Inspector Stephen Bradford said: “I would like to remind all that your home could be targeted by opportunist thieves if your front and back doors are unlocked, or windows are open during the warm weather. Please ensure that your homes are secure, and keep an eye out for your neighbour to make sure their homes are not at risk.

“Impersonating a police officer is a criminal offence. A genuine police officer will always take the time to reassure you of their identity. Always ask for their shoulder number which is unique to each officer, ask to see ID and call the police to confirm the officers identity if you are at all unsure or have any concerns.

“Incidents such as these are rare, but if you believe you have been approached by a person who is impersonating a police officer, please call 999.”
