AN Uffculme teenager is in the running for the England under- 18s national hockey squad.

Max Ansell, 17, caught the eye of the onlooking England coaches and selectors to earn a place in the 33-player list for the final National Age Group Squad trial.

His trial came after some outstanding performance for Wessex Leopards at the under 18s Futures Cup tournament in Cannock.

Max, who lives in Wellington, will learn his fate at the NAGS trial on November 22-23 when the squad will be reduced further to form the England under-18s national squad.

He said: “I’m delighted to have made it this far. Having played for England at under-16s level I’d love to earn the opportunity to make the final under-18s England squad and hope all my hard work will pay off.

“I hope that if I perform to my best I’ll be representing England under-18s this year.”

Max is studying A-level biology, chemistry and physics, and takes part in sport and music enrichment at Richard Huish College in Taunton.
