Plymouth in Bloom winners announced

Gardening enthusiasts from across Plymouth have scooped dozens of prizes in an award ceremony organised by the City Council.

The Plymouth in Bloom ceremony was held at the Duke of Cornwall hotel last night, where new committee members were also announced with the aim of giving the community a greater say in the campaign.

Lord Mayor Michael Wright presented the awards to the residents, community groups and businesses that impressed the local volunteer judges.

Among the gold winners were:

• The Retreat Care home for Best Container Display and Best Hanging Baskets.
• Jaipur Palace for Best Restaurant.
• Plympton St Maurice Civic Association for Best Street (Fore Street).
• Friends of Freedom Fields Park for Best Communal Garden.
• Diggin' It, Penlee Valley for Best Environmental Project.
• Embankment Road Allotments for Best Allotments.
• Maritime Inn for Best Public House.
• Yealmpstone Farm Primary School for Best School Garden Display.
• Brook Green Centre for Learning for Best School Scarecrow.
• Coombe Dean Academy for Best School Wheelbarrow.
• City Centre Manager Clint Jones, City Centre Planting for Jigsaw Garden.
• Mr Bishop, Volunteer Judge for Outstanding Contribution to the 'In Bloom' campaign.
• The Retreat Care Home for Best in Competition.
• Mr Mulvey, Chichester House Flats, Champion of Champions.

Councillor Brian Vincent, cabinet member for environment said: “I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who's entered Plymouth in Bloom and made such a great contribution to the campaign. It has been a wonderful success again this year with lots of residents, community groups and businesses taking part.”

The Plymouth in Bloom committee now has a new chairman and other lead members to give the community more input and control of the campaign.

The committee now includes chairman Bernard Todkill, vice chair Mike Gallagher, spokesperson Moe Townsend, secretary Sue Baddley and treasurer Ricky Hoskin.

They will continue to work with the rest of the committee including the council and Councillor Vincent to deliver the Plymouth in Bloom campaign for 2013.
