HONITON runner Jo Pavey finished in fifth place in the elite women's race at the 32nd Great North Run.

Pavey, 38, finished the 13.1-mile course in 1:09.20 - making her the top Brit in the world-famous race today (September 16).

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Pavey said: "I'm fairly pleased but at one point they seemed to get away.

"I kept going and I would've liked to have been up with them but it wasn't a bad time and I'm just trying to get my road legs back now.

"I've really enjoyed this year being back on the track and having the opportunity to do the 5,000m and 10,000m in the Olympic Stadium was awesome.

"Today it was such a tough field. You had two Olympic champions and a world champion so it was always going to be really really hard.

"I look forward now to trying to do a marathon in the autumn and this has really excited me about getting on the road again.

"Although it was tough it's always such an amazing event."
