A Wellington school is set for a new playground after winning £5,000 in a competition.

Wellington Junior School won the money after entering Leadbitter's Build a Greener Better Healthier School competition.

Part of the existing tarmac area will be transformed into a teaching and performance space that can be used for curriculum instruction and informally during break times.

The sample design ideas will be refined in discussion with the construction firm to produce a final design that will benefit the school the most.

Headmaster Adam Gibson said: “The themes of this competition are very much in line with how we try to teach at Wellington Junior School.

"The ability to take our curriculum outside will literally be a breath of fresh air - for the children and the staff team - enhancing learning and teaching. We are delighted to have won.”

The new space will benefit all pupils, from the three-year-olds in the Nursery to the 11-year-olds at the top of the school.

Bradley, Regional Director of Leadbitter's Western Construction division, which will undertake the works, said: “The enthusiasm of the school staff and students really came through in their entry.

“They have some great creative ideas, and we are excited to work with them and our supply chain to see how we can bring them to life for the benefit of current and future students.”
