A NEW ferry boat named by schoolchildren is to be launched in Exeter today (Wednesday).

Children from Topsham School helped select the name of the new Topsham Ferry boat, which will be revealed at the launch in Ferry Road.

The new boat will have a capacity three times bigger than the current ferry.

It will be able to take six to eight bikes and 12 passengers back and forth across the River Exe from Ferry Road Causeway in Topsham to the Canal bank at Topsham Lock.

This will provide an improved link to the Exe Estuary Trail, which runs along both sides of the estuary, and has been constructed by Devon County Council in partnership with Exeter City Council.

Cllr Rachel Sutton said: “The Topsham Ferry is extremely popular with walkers and cyclists and this replacement boat will mean that more people get to enjoy the service and are not kept waiting for so long.”

The ferry will be operated by Michael Stevens on behalf the city council.
