Falmouth's Marine Band kept up with tradition when they turned out to support the Falmouth Carnival on Saturday.

Always wanting to surprise the crowd with new uniforms this year they turned out dressed as Cossacks and with women accompanying them as if off to war. It was no surprise that they drew rapturous applause from the crowd which had turned out despite heavy rain earlier in the day.

The carnival was organised by the Lions Club of Falmouth and Penryn and by the time the procession got underway at 6pm conditions were ideal.

Every year, local groups and businesses come together with residents to take part in the carnival, and although entries have suffered in recent years following the clamp down on floats due to high insurance costs, they are picking up.

The town was lit with music as well as colour, as the Falmouth Marine Band led the procession of people through the streets.

People lined the streets to watch the procession which followed the judging first of the children's' classes and then the adults.

Lion's Club members accompanied the procession collecting money as they went.

Children's classes were well supported with groups such as the Laburnum Playgroup who took part on their own float.

Roger Prowse, Lions Club president said he was delighted with the event and although the final count was not yet known, all monies raised on the day would be for the benefit of local groups and individuals.
