Fed up residents in Carleen are calling for action to be taken to stop drivers speeding through their village.

Two pets have been run over and killed in the past fortnight and local people say excessive speed is to blame.

Calls for calming measures have intensified, with one resident even resorting to painting the word "slow" on the road in a bid to drive the message home.

Breage parish councillor Tony Ackland, who lives in Carleen, told a council meeting this week feelings were running high in the village.

"Several people are getting very angry and some have talked about doing something about it themselves," he said.

"These drivers are not even stopping. They are just going straight through the village."

Concerns over speeding at various locations across the parish were aired at the meeting after members heard Kerrier council was seeking suitable projects for a funding bid relating to traffic problems.

Local authorities have been invited to apply for a share of £30 million under the Government's Home Zone Challenge.

The initiative is aimed at creating areas where residents are given priority over traffic through measures such as traffic calming, public spaces, play areas, seating and landscaping.

Kerrier officials have said schemes which can be supported by petitions or other documentation are more likely to be considered.

Breage councillors said a substantial amount of documentation had been collected in relation to speeding in various areas including Ashton and Breage and all the information should be passed to the district council.
