Visitors to Helston Folk Museum on Saturday were enchanted by the playing of young Porthleven flautist Claire-Louise Auguste.

Claire-Louise, aged nine, a pupil at Porthleven School, has won a number of awards since starting to play the flute three years ago. She also plays the piccolo, recorder and piano.

Her performance was one of a host of free live events taking place at the museum on Saturdays during August.

Designed to appeal to all ages and tastes, the programme aims to provide a flavour of the homegrown talent on offer in the Helston and Lizard area.

This Saturday sees a demonstration of cabinet making by Marcus Simms and a performance by the St Mellanus Singers.

On August 18, Rachel Baker will demonstrate gift card making and Helston School jazz band will be playing, while on August 25 there will be a demonstration of box making.

Visitors enjoying free entry to the museum on Saturdays will also be able to view an exhibition of paintings by Maureen Davie, which runs until August 17, followed by an exhibition by John Whale-Charter until August 31.

Kerrier district council's heritage development officer Nicolas Boyer, who is based at the museum, said it was hoped to extend the programme of activities throughout the year.

He said: "It is only fitting that today's vibrant heritage and culture should come alive and engage new audiences in the community setting of the museum, which celebrates the lives and achievements of local people, past and present.

"We extend an invitation to all local bands, artists and craftspeople to come and perform in this lovely setting."
