Raw sewage littered the waterfront off Greenbank on Thursday following a torrential downpour.

As the town centre suffered its second flooding in a month so residents of Greenbank became increasingly angry with SWW who have carried out extensive works in the area.

Thursday's sewage into the Carrick Roads is said to have come from the new pipework installation at Greenbank and designed to take sewage from Flushing into the new multi-million sewerage treatment works in Falmouth Docks.

Carrick councillor John Hambly who represents Arwenack Ward is furious. He watched as the waste poured into the water rapidly discolouring the surface.

The make matters worse, the spill came only days after letters were sent to SWW expressing concern over noise emanating from the pipework, blockages and smells.

Lead Projector Engineer for SWW Keith Field said earlier investigations had shown a blockage in the chamber resulting in the retention of sewer contents for longer than normal. He warned there could always be potential "for a rogue piece of debris" in the sewer which could cause blockage.

Mr Field said there should be no worries over the safety of the system and further investigations would be carried out.

He added that while it was recognised there was also still substantial run off from the Moor in the town centre, "possibly highway water", SWW were checking their own calculations to confirm adequacy of the pipework.

A few days later Falmouth was flooded and raw sewage poured out of the pipework at Greenbank.

Mr Hambly told the Packet this week: "I am absolutely deplored not just for local residents but also for the retailers for the upheaval they have had to endure.

He was horrified to be told SWW would check to see if they had got their calculations right.

"I find that totally and utterly unacceptable," he said. "I will not let this rest."
