A FIRE has raged though a barn full of cattle in Ottery St Mary tonight.

Fire crews arrived at Knightstone Farm after 8pm to find the farm building well alight.

As the barn was reported to have animals inside it, crews began by using hydraulic cutting gear to save the cattle from the fire, which also affected an asbestos roof and overhead power cables.

After using hose reels on the blaze, fire crews then withdrew to safety and a hazard zone was established.

The fire was left to burn under control and crews were expected to be detained for a considerable period.
