AGE Concern in Exeter has made a plea to families to consider giving a different kind of Grandparents Day gift on Sunday – a personal alarm.
A charity spokesperson said: “Last year, thousands of cards and bunches of flowers were given by families on Grandparents’ Day to say thankyou to the UK’s 13 million grandparents.
“But every year more than a quarter of a million elderly people seek medical treatment in an Accident and Emergency Department as a result of a fall at home.
“And Age Concern assists over 40,000 people in the UK every year from accidents around the home through its personal alarm system Aid Call.
“A personal alarm provides an additional level of reassurance, security and confidence for elderly or vulnerable individuals.”
Karen Trist from Age Concern Exeter added: “Grandparents contribute so much to both their families and local communities that Grandparents’ Day is the perfect opportunity to say thanks for the difference they make.
“For families that really want to show their appreciation, an Aid Call alarm would be an ideal gift to help grandparents to remain independent within their own homes.”
One touch of the button on an Aid Call personal alarm connects to a dedicated Response Centre, which is staffed by professionally trained operators 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Aid Call provides real assurance to families that those using the alarm, feel secure to go about their normal lives.
The alarm system operates a two-way speech link to enable the person who has raised the alarm to talk to an operator within seconds.
The operator can then in turn contact their chosen keyholder - a friend, neighbour or relative - who will visit and offer assistance. If there is no contact available, the emergency services will be contacted.
The alarm is lightweight and can be worn around the neck as a pendant, on a wrist strap or clipped to clothing.
It is waterproof so can be worn at all times whether in the bathroom, kitchen and garden.
You can now buy an Aid Call alarm for a gift online with “Easy-Connect”, which offers a saving of £80, please visit http://www.aidcall.co.uk/personalcare/shop/index.php.
