SIGNS are now up to warn motorists of children cycling to school in the Blackdown Hills.
Pupils at Churchstanton Primary School have their own cycle signs along a designated route from the nearby village of Churchin-ford.
Head teacher Simon Mills said: “The rural location of the school makes it very difficult for children to walk from the village and cycling is an ideal alternative.
“It was felt, however, that not all drivers were aware of the school’s location in the heart of the Blackdowns and as a result would not be expecting children to be cycling along the lanes during the week.”
A competition was held at the school to create a sign and pupil James Scholes won.
Mr Mills added: “After many months of consultation with the highways and planning departments at Taunton Deane Council, the signs have finally been put up. We believe we are the only school in Somerset to have their own designated cycle route. Churchstanton Primary School will also meet with their parish and county councillor regarding the issue of speed reduction signs on approach roads to the school.
