A REVOLUTIONARY vision to transform Crediton into a self-sufficient and sustainable community has been unveiled by a local action group.
The five-year plan is the brainchild of environmental group Crediton Climate Change (CCA), which has come up with various ideas to improve the town’s green credentials.
The Energy Descent Plan looks at issues such as food, transport, energy use, waste, the local economy, schools and young people, community well-being, its surroundings and links with the wider world.
Proposals include producing the bulk of foodstuffs locally, making better use of gardens, allotments and smallholdings with a more sustainable distribution system.
A public transport shake-up, the promotion of car-sharing, minibus schemes and improved facilities for cyclists and pedestrians are also planned.
A new local currency could be produced under the scheme.
Now, the group is inviting local residents to discuss the proposals at a public meeting in the town on September 27.
CCA chairman Gerald Coyningham said: “Many people feel powerless when thinking about global warming.
“However, our belief in CCA is that, if we all work together, we can bring about change to create a more sustainable and vibrant community in Crediton as well as bringing influence to bear on policy makers at the national level.”
Other proposals include: l More locally owned shops and businesses; l Less commuting; l More recycling; l Promotion of environmental issues in local schools; l Greater public use of the town square; l Tough action on pollution and litter l Planting of trees, including some in High Street.
The group also hopes to create a town focus on working with other communities in campaigning for action on climate change and energy issues and increasing awareness of how consumer choices impact on the Third World.
Local traders would be encouraged to keep packaging to a minimum, with more recycling, sharing and exchanging of goods in the wider community.
Mr Coyningham said it was not possible to estimate the cost of the project at this stage.
The meeting will take place in the Congregational Church, Crediton, from 9.30am-1pm. All are welcome.
