WALKERS and cyclists may soon be able to enjoy a new trail across Dartmoor.

Devon County Council has submitted a planning application to Dartmoor National Park Authority for a cycling and walking trail linking Moretonhampstead to Lustleigh.

The proposed Wray Valley Trail follows the old Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead railway line, and stretches around 6km from Pound Lane in Moretonhampstead to Knowle Road in Lustleigh.

It will be fully accessible to cyclists, walkers, disabled people and horseriders.

The plans have been developed following a consultation and a public exhibition held in 2003.

An independent ecological survey has been conducted on the route, to minimise the effect of the scheme on protected species. The proposals include 600 metres of hedgerow to be planted both sides of the trail to the east of Wray Barton Manor to provide a route for the dormice population.

The trail will also be slightly narrower at Caseley Court to maintain dormice habitat.

Councillor Margaret Rogers, Devon County Council Executive Member for Environment, said: “Since the public consultation five years ago a lot of work has gone into minimising the impact of the proposals on the local environment and wildlife habitats.

“This trail can be a unique asset that may be enjoyed by the local community to benefit their health while allowing them to reduce their carbon footprint.

“It will be a valuable addition to Devon’s growing cycle network and will provide local people with a green alternative for travel between Moretonhampstead and Lustleigh, without relying on their cars.”
