DEVON Primary Care Trust is looking for people who have experience of suffering from a stroke to volunteer to help improve services.

Stroke is the third biggest killer and the most significant cause of disability in the UK.

In response to a National Audit Office report on the state of stroke services, the Department of Health recently published a comprehensive stroke strategy.

As a result, the South West Strategic Health Authority is reviewing stroke services in the region.

Devon PCT is redesigning the services it commissions and provides for stroke patients.

Tim Ayers, a consultant nurse, said: “We have some notable areas of good practice in stroke care across Devon.

“Stroke services in south Devon recently won a national award, but we want to ensure that patients across the county receive the best possible service in all areas and at every stage of recovery.

“We want to involve patients and the public as much as possible in making decisions about the services we provide.

“We are inviting people to join local stroke forums in the Exeter area, south Devon and north Devon to help improve stroke services.

“We are also looking for a few individuals to join a group of clinicians and managers in planning what stroke services are commissioned for Devon.”

For more information or to express an interest contact Tim Ayers, who is based at Honiton Hospital, on 01404 540540 or via email at tim.ayers@eastdevon-pct.nhs.uk.
