MEMBERS and staff from Devon County Council paid a special tribute to Exeter City Football Club at a reception last night to celebrate the team’s promotion to the Football League.

Council Chairman Cllr John Rawlinson welcomed players and staff from the club, known as the ‘Pride of Devon’ at County Hall in Exeter, where council Leader Brian Greenslade also announced a three-year sponsorship proposal to engage young people in local communities in sport.

Cllr Rawlinson said: “On behalf of Devon County Council, I would like to congratulate the club on its promotion – a fantastic achievement and one that is richly deserved.

“The Grecians’ recent signing of Marcus Stewart shows the club’s ambition for the coming season, and I would like to wish them every success for their league games – I hope they continue to go from strength to strength.”

Cllr Greenslade added: “The club has shown remarkable fortitude through fluctuating fortunes, and after five years out, has now regained its rightful place back in the Football League.

“This achievement is testament to the strength of support for the Grecians, and to the determination of the players and club staff who have all worked so hard to move the club forward.

“But their achievements don’t just stop at matches: The club has been actively involved in local communities, working with children to get them involved in sport and improve their skills. “This initiative not only encourages children to get active and stay healthy; it provides them with valuable skills.”
