A DATE has been revealed for the first ever Pride celebrations set to take place in a Somerset city this summer.

Wells Pride 2024 will mark the first event of its kind in the area, and will take place on Saturday, August 3.

The event is the brainchild of Wells City Councillor and Queer activist, Georgie Robbins, who has 'always wanted' to bring Pride to the city.

‘The Queer community of Wells and beyond deserve the opportunities and experiences larger cities relish in," Cllr Robbins said.

"Whilst Queer hate crimes aren’t widely experienced here, I feel the real challenge is finding a place here and accessing resources for our community which are severely lacking.

"This is history in the making for Wells."

The recently re-opened Bishop's Barn will play host to the celebrations, as well as the surrounding Wells Recreation Ground.

Queer musicians are already booked to perform live music on the bandstand, alongside performances from local group Portway Music School.

Attendants to the event can expect a range of stalls from Queer-run business owners, as well as entertaining drag acts, and expressive art opportunities such as canvases to paint on.

Cllr Robbins wants the event to be interactive, and hopes to encourage activities such as picking up a guitar and joining in with the live music.

"I'm one of those people that has been to loads of Prides," she explained.

"I've been to Brighton Pride, which was brilliant, but it's massive, and a few hours away.

"Some people want something a bit more intimate, especially if you're anxious and don't like big crowds."
