The cost of living crisis has led to lots of people looking for new and easy ways to save money around the home. Saving water if you’re on a water meter is a great way to drive down monthly outgoings, and it’s good for the environment by keeping more water in our rivers and streams. Heating water makes up a large portion of your energy bill too, so with the recent rise in energy costs, there are substantial savings to be made by making small changes.

Here’s what you could save every year on water and energy bills:

  • £150 SAVING FOR A FAMILY OF 4 - If each person takes a minute off their shower time each day. Try taking shorter showers, turning down the flow rate, turn off when you lather or jumping in the shower straight away.
  • £400 SAVING - A leaking toilet could cost you more than £30 a month. To check your loo, dry the back of the toilet pan with toilet paper. Then leave a dry piece of toilet paper on the back of the pan overnight. If it’s wet in the morning you might have a leaky loo.
  • £50 SAVING - Cutting out two washing machine cycles per week by only using full loads. Washing machines use around 50 litres a load– make sure you have full loads and get another wear out of items before they go in the laundry basket.
  • £20 – £100 SAVING - Check taps in your kitchen and bathroom for leaks. A tap dripping at a rate of two drips per second can cost around £20 a year. This can quickly escalate to a constant stream of drips wasting £100 a year.

Tackling leaks across the region

 After one of the driest summers on record, it’s important that we all do our bit to save water to make sure we don’t remain in drought next year. A big part of this is leaks on water company pipe network, so Wessex Water is using the latest technology to ramp up the detection and repair of leaks, often on the same day they’re reported. The company is fixing around 1,200 leaks every month and has reduced leakage by 30% since the year 2000. It is also renewing ageing water mains to prevent new leaks. Around a quarter of leakage comes from customers’ own pipes, including the pipe which connects your home to our water main, which is your responsibility, but Wessex Water may be able to fix it for free.
