'Wonderful response' to cinema news

THE new owner of the Tivoli cinema in Tiverton said there had been a "wonderful response" to the news that the cinema was due to re-open on June 20.

And Geoff Greaves, director of Merlin Cinemas who have paid an undisclosed sum for the lease, promised a summer of top entertainment to tempt the public back to the 75-year-old picturehouse.

Mr Greaves said: "As the cinema has been closed since last August we are busy giving the place a lick of paint and installing a modern sound system. People are constantly going up to the workers there say how delighted they are to have the cinema back."

Mr Greaves said the new Indiana Jones movie has already been earmarked as one of their summer blockbusters.

The price of a standard ticket will be set at £6 with a special discount for the first month.

The cinema closed last year when the lease held by previous owner Mike Jackson ran out.

Tiverton town councillor Janet Rendle said: "It's really good news. Bryn William's did a fantastic job and it was the commitment of him and his fellow campaigners that saved the cinema.

She added: "Keeping the cinema open saves people having to travel to Exeter or Taunton. So many people have got behind it now lets hope they all support it."

Celebrity backers of the of the Save the Tivoli campaign included Dame Helen Mirren, Kenneth Branagh and Sir Ian McKellen.
