AVON and Somerset Police Authority want to recruit an Independent Custody Visitor in the Taunton area.
The role involves observing, commenting and reporting on the condition of the force's custody cells and how the people detained are looked after.
Custody visitors work in pairs and call unannounced at police stations.
Scheme administrator Linda Handley said: "Entering a custody suite for the first time can be a very daunting experience for anyone.
"Our job is to ensure that those in custody are being treated fairly and are in suitable accommodation."
