A WATCHDOG has said the Crown Prosecution Service in Avon and Somerset is satisfactory and can improve.

The HM CPS Inspectorate Overall Performance Assessment report on CPS Avon and Somerset published today (Tuesday) gives the area a Fair' rating, but recognises the progress made since last year's report.

A fair rating is satisfactory, but with scope for improvement.

Barry Hughes, chief crown prosecutor for Avon and Somerset, said: "I recognise that the report identifies weaknesses as well as strengths and we will work constructively to bring about the necessary improvements. I concur with the conclusion that the area has not yet reached its potential and look forward to working towards that aim.

"I am pleased that the report recognises the effort and commitment made by my managers and staff in working to increase the effectiveness of our local criminal justice system.

"I am especially pleased that we have been recognised for our progress in the service that we provide to victims and witnesses, without whom we struggle to bring offenders to justice."

The report found that performance had dropped in five areas, improved in four and remained stable in four.

The report states: "CPS Avon and Somerset has been keen to take an early part in national initiatives aimed at improving the effectiveness of the criminal justice system, but the effort and commitment of managers and staff has not yet been reflected in outcomes and the area has not achieved its full potential.

"Inspectors found casework to be a mixed picture of some good outcomes and performance, and some less successful results."
