PRIVATE studios of artists all over Devon will be open to art and craft lovers during the next fortnight as part of a countywide art celebration.

The open studio event, called Devon Art Works, is being organised by Devon Artist Network and has been given £18,000 from Devon County Council's Culture budget.

Previously called Nine Days of Art, this year's event takes place from September 8-23 and will feature original work by 572 artists in 274 venues.

Devon Art Works features both established artists and those in the early stages of their careers working across a broad spectrum including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass work, photography, metalwork, textiles, jewellery, wood carving and collage as well as digital work, multimedia, sound art and installations.

Devon County Council has supported the development of DAN to champion the work of artists and makers across the county.

Executive member for culture, councillor Sheila Hobden, said the previous event attracted 33,000 visitors, over 400 artists and £132,000 sales.

"Devon Art Works is a considerable progression from its previous incarnation and the event promises to be an inspiring and exciting one.

"The creative industries are an increasingly important sector for the county, and it is a great opportunity for Devon to showcase the range and diversity of art work in the region to a much wider audience.

"People should prepare themselves to be astonished, delighted, inspired, challenged, amused, intrigued and taken by surprise."

A catalogue with full details of participating artists and venues is available from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, galleries, arts venues and local council offices.
