THE former London Mayor and leader of the Leave campaign Boris Johnson visited Tiverton today.

He arrived at Tiverton Parkway as reporters were ready to bombard him with questions.

Mr Johnson planned to visit the Tiverton Hotel for lunch with the Tiverton and Honiton conservatives. The lunch was organised by MP for Tiverton and Honiton Neil Parish before the Brexit verdict.

His visit comes the day after he announced he would not be running for the Conservative Party leadership.

Announcing that he would not stand in the race, Mr Johnson said: “Well, I must tell you, my friends, you who have waited faithfully for the punchline of this speech, that having consulted colleagues and in view of the circumstances in parliament, I have concluded that person cannot be me.”

Facebook user Jamie Nathaniel Carne Whyte posted on the social media site: "We came to the Tory dinner in Tiverton to see Boris. Asked him to apologise for racial abuse received by my friend due to the vote that he caused. Might have called him a massive child..."

Footage of Mr Johnson's arrival showed Mr Johnson being asked to "apologise to my friend who has received racial abuse" before the heckler added: "Boris you're a massive child".

More than 150 gathered with Mr Johnson to enjoy a lunch of baked salmon for mains and chocolate brownies for dessert.

Mid Devon joined the majority in the referendum result by voting to Leave the EU as around 53 per cent voted out.
