A REUNION resulted in the highest attendance to date for a Tiverton school after the introduction of a Facebook page and the news of the building's demolition.

The Tiverton Grammar School reunion was held on Friday, May 6, and hosted over 200 people. Ex-pupils from all over the country returned to their roots to reunite at the school, even some people from further afield in Germany, Finland and the US made the trip to Tiverton.

Tours of the buildings and grounds were held this year to spark more nostalgia amongst old friends. Governors and teachers currently involved with the Castle Primary school aided in providing the tours to everyone visiting the school.

Popularity of the event spiked once a Facebook page was created inviting people to the reunion. Although, it is thought the news of building's demolition in the next year or two also sparked more interest in the event.

Stories and jokes were reminisced by ex-pupils and teachers alike, with a special appearance from former head teacher, from 1966-73, John Lello. MP Gary Streeter spoke throughout the night about his journey from the school, to King's College London, and on to parliament.

On display were a large selection of photos and memorabilia from the school's years in operation from opening in 1911 to the closure in 1977.

A buffet and drinks were provided from attendees bringing a 'plate to share' along with them.

Pat Purrington and Stephanie Wimms, organisers of the reunion, said: "A big thank you must go to everyone who came along to this reunion and to all the many people who supported and helped at the event in any way."

After organising the event for eight years, the two ladies have decided to pass on the responsibility. Anyone wishing to take up this opportunity should contact Pat on 01884 254558, who will tell you everything you need to know about bringing old friends together again.
