Rugby hero tackles child cruelty

SPORTING legend Martin Johnson is encouraging people in Devon to sign up to the NSPCC's Big Bike Ride in a bid to end child cruelty.

The charity is looking for cyclists to organise and take part in rides across the UK over the weekend of June 29 - July 1.

Commenting on why he is supporting the Big Bike Ride, Martin said: "As a dad I know how important the work of the NSPCC is.

"For many children a lack of love and support and years of abuse and neglect have a significant impact on their confidence and self esteem, making it harder for them to achieve their full potential."

The NSPCC hopes to raise £300,000 this year to help some of the most vulnerable children in the UK and Channel Islands.

Martin added: "Whatever your age or fitness level, the emphasis is on having fun and riding at your own pace.

"Rides can take place in local communities with your family, or if you prefer a more gruelling challenge you can tackle a longer distance or join a Big Bike Ride organised by an NSPCC group."

A Big Bike Ride will take place on Sunday July 1 along the Tarka Trail in North Devon. The ride is open to cyclists of all abilities and age groups.

Anyone wishing to take part in the Big Bike Ride 2007 needs to register for a fundraising pack and sponsorship form as soon as possible.
