YOUNGSTERS in Paignton are being encouraged to let their imaginations run wild at an exciting creative learning club.

A joint project between Sanctuary Housing and community interest organisation Imagine, the weekly Homework Club at Great Parks Community Centre is open to local children to go along and build up their literacy and numeracy skills through art and music.

Each week, more than 30 youngsters are taking part in stimulating and fun activities such as playing the drums and creating eye-catching decorations, as well as being provided with a secure and dedicated space to complete homework tasks.

The programme is allowing the young people to develop their life skills by increasing confidence and self-esteem, engaging with the local community and encouraging them to make a positive contribution to their school lives.

Lynne Roberts, Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager for Torbay, is thrilled with the club’s success. She said: “We were really excited about the project even before it started, but I think it’s surprised everyone with how many youngsters are going along every week. I’d encourage all young residents aged between 5 and 12 in the Great Parks area of Paignton to come along.

“It’s obviously struck a chord with the local community and it’s been very successful. We’re looking forward to continuing our work with the club long into the future for the benefit of young residents.”

Julie Bose from Imagine added: “Come along to the Wednesday club between 4pm and 6pm and join in. It’s a fun, friendly way to learn a range of skills, hobbies and interests which can help in lots of ways.”
