TO celebrate National Nest Box Week in February, a bird box making event was organised by East Devon District Council Countryside staff Emma Jones, Cranbrook Country Park Ranger, and Education Ranger, Penny Evans, who were delighted with attendance at the event.

The event was well supported by locals, residents from Cranbrook, and further afield from Whimple and Broadclyst. Families were given a bird box kit and a set of instructions. Then with some help, they made themselves a bird box to take home. With over 100 people through our door, and 50 bird boxes made, we were happy to finish the hammering at 2pm.

A washing line was used to display some interesting alternative nest sites that birds have used, including a teapot, and an old boot attached to a tree, which gave people lots of food for thought. Youngsters also had a craft activity , making birds from pine cones.

The bird box kits were very kindly donated by MiSpace, who are building the secondary school, and the shops in Cranbrook. The Countryside team send many thanks to them for supporting such a worthwhile event.
