ACORN to Oak run by Barton, Acorn Youth Community & Sports Centre in Torquay has won a £49,982 Big Lottery Fund grant following yesterday’s nail-biting head-to-head in The People’s Millions on ITV West Country West last night.

It is fantastic news for the local project, which can now really make a difference by modernising and refurbishing a 50 year old community centre that is in poor condition and expensive to maintain.

The refurbishment includes the purchase of equipment for specific activities that take place in the centre, such as a projector screen for the IT Hub, and mirrors for the dance studio.

The project will make the centre more sustainable and better able to meet the needs of the community now, and in the future.

This is the ninth year that the Big Lottery Fund and ITV have given the public the chance to choose where the Lottery good cause cash goes in their region. The People’s Millions public vote determines which deserving cause will win the contest and take the funding back to their community.

This week (November 24-26), two projects are going head-to-head each night on ITV evening news pitching for a life changing grant. There are four awards of up to £50,000 for grabs in the region – one award for each night, as well as a bonus award announced on Thursday for the runner up with the most phone votes across the week.

Voting numbers will be available on the day the projects are due to appear on ITV from www.peoplesmillions.org.uk as well as in The Daily Mirror. Telephone voting lines will open at 9am on each day and close at midnight with winners announced the following day.

Dawn Austwick, Big Lottery Fund Chief Executive, said: “People’s Millions is a great way for local people to get behind hard working projects doing great things for their local communities. This is a brilliant result for the people of Torquay and shows that local lives really can be changed by you. There are some excellent projects still to be showcased, so tune in to ITV West Country West, pick up the phone and vote for your favourite project.”
