LOCALS in Plymouth can get healthy eating tips at the Diabetes UK Enjoy Food stand at Tesco Plymouth Transit Way Extra on Friday, November 21.

Kim Kemp, from Plymouth, has Type 1 diabetes and is encouraging people with diabetes to pop into the store on Transit Way to get free dietary advice and simple suggestions on how to make living with the condition more manageable.

A dietitian, with support from volunteers, will give live demonstrations about ways to save money as well as calories and how to eat five fruit and vegetables a day.

Kim was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 34, and has had the condition for more than 20 years. She used to have injections of insulin four times a day, but now receives her insulin through a pump attached to her body.

She said: “A healthy diet and exercise supports good control of blood glucose levels. No food needs to be banned altogether, and I can still enjoy some treats while managing my diabetes well. Learning to shop appropriately is a skill which can really help people with diabetes. It is great that Diabetes UK is giving people in Plymouth the chance to speak to a dietitian and get some simple tips to help people eat well with diabetes. I would encourage anyone with condition to pop along to Tesco Plymouth Transit Way Extra on 21 November.”

Diabetes is a condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly. Whether a person is living with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, eating healthily is an important part of managing blood glucose levels and staying healthy.

Diabetes UK has developed the Enjoy Food events through the National Charity Partnership with Tesco. The partnership aims to support the millions of people who have to live with diabetes every day and help people to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

People interested in visiting the Enjoy Food stand, can simply drop by Tesco Plymouth Transit Way Extra from 9am–5.30pm on Friday, November 21.
