MID Devon District Council has approved plans to build 112 new homes at the former Cummings Nursery site, near Honiton Road in Cullompton.

The development, to be named Rivel's Green, will comprise a range of one, two, three and four bedroom properties, including a provision for affordable housing.

Steve Russell, Managing Director at of developer Devonshire Homes, said: “We welcome this decision and look forward to starting work on this long-neglected site.

“Mid Devon badly needs quality new homes, and we are committed to helping to meet the demand for a balanced mix of housing.

“The council's housing strategy calls for 390 new dwellings per year, so we are pleased to be doing our part in alleviating housing pressures in Cullompton as we have done across Devon.”

Cummings Nursery is the fifth residential project delivered in Mid Devon by Devonshire Homes in recent years.

The developer has created new homes in Tiverton at its Moorhayes, Gilbert Scott Way, Gingko Court and Old Mill Court developments, as well as homes at its Scotts and Meadow View sites in Bampton.

Devonshire Homes has also applied to build 97 houses and shops at the Mid-Devon Business Park in the village of Willand.

The Cullompton development is scheduled to start work in 2015, starting with the demolition of the derelict greenhouses currently on site.

Mr Russell added: “In line with the priorities of the Mid Devon Local Plan, this development will use previously developed and now derelict land without having to turn to green field sites. We are also making a significant contribution to local funding for education, community, air quality and public open spaces.”
