Police are set to launch a new initiative to identify, understand and record the impact of alcohol in the evening and night life within Plymouth.

The operation will specifically look at excessive drinking, street drinking and underage drinking, in order to reduce alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour, by identifying where alcohol has been a contributing factor in an incident or crime.

Work will also be carried out to support vulnerable individuals who may be affected by alcohol or alcohol related crime, by signposting them to relevant organisations for support and advice.

Other activities also include breathalysing offenders arrested for alcohol related offences, to ascertain their level of intoxication, which will help officers identify those individuals demonstrating repeat alcohol related offending behaviours.

The force says that data collected during the operation will support problem solving work to reduce offending and risk taking behaviours, by working with partner agencies and licensed premises, whilst also raising awareness of the issues surrounding excessive alcohol consumption.

Licensing officer Sergeant Martin Worthington said: ‘Plymouth is a safe and vibrant city, and this initiative will provide us with an excellent opportunity to support its thriving evening and night time scene, whilst also gaining valuable insight into the issues surrounding alcohol related incident and crime.’
