LOCAL volunteers are linking up with East Devon District Council to bring an old, dilapidated building into community use.

Today, StreetScene staff from East Devon District Council (EDDC) will power wash the outside of the old Woolworths building in Marine Place.

During Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 August volunteers from Seaton will give the outside a fresh coat of paint and clean the inside to enable it to be used by local community groups for exhibitions.

Councillor Iain Chubb, EDDC’s Cabinet Member for Environment, whose staff will carry out the power wash, said: “We’re delighted to support this community initiative by lending a hand with the cleaning. It is a tragedy that this building has been left to deteriorate and become somewhat of an eyesore especially being in a very prominent position.

Solution

“I hope by the community showing such commitment to making improvements and getting some use from the building that the new agent, Richardson Gill, is able to secure a long-term solution for its use. The regeneration of Seaton is really taking off and this can only help further investment in the town. Thank you to all those who have helped make this happen and are giving up their time”.

Following the clean-up, an exhibition of the plans for Seaton Jurassic, the exciting new visitor centre, will be one of the displays featured in the building.

EDDC will be lending the volunteers high-visibility jackets and traffic cones to ensure they are safe during the clean-up and painting operations.
