Police in Torbay are appealing for witnesses after two people were injured during an aggravated burglary in the early hours of this morning.

Officers were called to an address in Church Street, Paignton, at 1.12am today, Tuesday, August 5, following reports that a group of men had forced their way into a property.

They were believed to be in possession of a number of weapons including a knife.

An ambulance attended to treat a man and woman who suffered minor facial injuries after being punched in the head.

A police dog unit assisted with the search for the suspects who had fled the scene, and the recovery of a knife sheath.

Scenes of crime officers carried out an examination of the scene and enquiries are continuing to establish if any items of property were taken.

Four men, one woman and one female juvenile, all from the Torbay area, were later arrested and taken into custody at Torquay police station where they remain.

Detective Inspector Mark Waldron, based in Torquay, said: “This is a serious incident and we are keen to speak to anyone who saw or heard any suspicious activity in the Crown and Anchor Way, Winner Street, Palace Avenue and Church Street areas of the town shortly before or after 1am.”

Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call police on 101 quoting police reference 35 of 5 August, or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or report online at www.Crimestoppers-uk.org
