EXETER has successfully renewed its status as a Fairtrade City following an assessment by the Fairtrade Foundation.

The status, which was first awarded to Exeter in 2004, is provided in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the city and the achievement of five qualifying goals. This includes a wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from local people, businesses, voluntary organisations, faith groups and schools, and a committed Fairtrade City Steering Group to co-ordinate the campaign. The city has to reapply for the award every two years.

Cllr Ollie Pearson, Chair of Exeter City Council's Fairtrade Steering Group, said: "I am really pleased that Exeter’s strong support for Fairtrade has been recognised once again.

"In particular the Fairtrade Foundation were impressed by the Council’s public awareness campaigns in Bedford Square and various fetes and festivals around the city as well as the use of social media.

"I would like to thank Ian Martin and Tim Payne who put so much work into this campaign during their time as City Councillors."
