Mid Devon Star: HMS Sutherland 'Road to Twickenham' charity event HMS Sutherland 'Road to Twickenham' charity event

A TEAM of 16 Royal Naval sailors from Plymouth-based HMS Sutherland ran the equivalent of 240 miles from their ship to London to help fellow sailors and their families in need.

The team ran the same cumulative distance from HM Naval Base, Devonport, to Twickenham when time allowed during their lunch breaks within the week leading up to the annual eagerly-awaited Army v Navy rugby match.

The sailors expect to raise about £465 for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).

Leading Seaman (Sea) Kieran Woodward said: "The total miles were run between the 16 volunteers from the ship's company.

"The total amount of money raised stands at £372, not taking into count Gift Aid, so looking around the £465 mark.

After our ‘Road to Twickenham’ challenge my legs are enjoying fully deserved time off!".

The challenge involves travelling the equivalent distance from to Twickenham stadium by completing a ride, row, swim or run.

The team was made up of a range of ages and running capabilities, each wanting to help to chip away at the 240 miles over the course of their lunch hours.

Petty Officer Gary Thompson said: “I was glad that I took part and although my three miles initially seemed a lot, I found it very rewarding.’’

Leading Seaman Kieran Woodward said: “A worthy cause for a worthy charity plus I received a rather fetching vest.”

Petty Officer Kane Elkington said: “Fantastic to see so many willing runners to help achieve the challenge, a strong effort by all and great to see. Let’s hope we can do the same perhaps next year.”

RNRMC's beneficiaries include serving and ex-serving personnel of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines, and their families.
