Police have named the soldier who died when he was struck by a trailer near Okehampton on Tuesday (April 29).

He has been named as Private Cameron Laing from Nottingham.

Officers received a report of a fatal incident at Bracken Tor youth hostel at around 9.45pm.

The 20-year-old man, serving with 7 Theatre Logistic Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, was struck by an uncoupled trailer and pinned against the towing vehicle.

He suffered severe head and chest injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

His family and partner have paid tribute to him, saying: “Cameron was an amazing son, brother, boyfriend and expectant father. He was a loveable rogue, always playing practical jokes and the fun in any situation. He couldn’t wait to be a father to his son, baby Cameron. He will be sorely missed by everyone whose life he touched.”

Both the towing vehicle and trailer were military items and were part of a small convoy heading towards Okehampton battle camp.

The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and a police investigation into the incident continues.
