People evacuated from Dawlish as storm hits: Significant additional damage to rail line
9:15am Monday 17th February 2014 in News
Thirty people had to be evacuated on Friday as the latest storm hit Dawlish, causing more damage to the rail line.
Police and other agencies decided to evacuate parts of the town during the evening of Friday as a safety measure, due to high tides, strong winds and crashing waves.
Described as a "preventative measure", they were taken to Dawlish Leisure Centre.
A site visit at 9am on Saturday saw a review of any damage to the sea wall, with residents not be allowed back before that time.
The containers placed as a temporary measure have not been washed away however the sea wall has suffered further damage.
A Network Rail spokesman said: "The temporary sea wall performed heroically and remains intact, but there has been further extensive damage to the wall. This will clearly have an impact on timescales, but we won’t know till midweek what they may now be.”
