WORK on a controversial new zebra crossing on a bust Tiverton road is to start next Monday (January 13).
The safety of the planned crossing on Leat Street, Tiverton had been questioned by Mid Devon councillors Alan Griffiths and Gerald Luxton - who felt it was dangerously positioned.
But work on £45,000 scheme has been given the go ahead by Devon County Council.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “This is a popular route for people walking to school, college or into town and this crossing will improve safety and provide better access to the local hospital. The scheme supports school travel plans and addresses the safety concerns which had previously been raised by the schools and local residents.”
