A SITE in Cullompton which has been derelict for a decade and labelled an “absolute eyesore” could be developed into 120 homes if planners give the go-ahead next week.

Mid Devon District Council planners will meet on Wednesday to discuss plans for a residential development on the site of the derelict greenhouses at Cummings Nursery, off Honiton Road.

The greenhouses have not been used for over ten years and would have to be demolished before work on any development could start.

A report by planning officer Simon Trafford for Wednesday’s meeting has recommended that planning permission be granted, subject to conditions.

Cullompton North Ward councillor Nikki Woollatt believes the development will be a huge positive for Cullompton.

She said: “The development is something that could benefit Cullompton as a whole.

“There are things in the plans which can improve pedestrian access into the town, and that’s something which I hope can happen.

“The site at the moment is an absolute eyesore, so the development will help to change that as well.

“The greenhouses have been out of use for a decade – probably longer – so this can benefit the town.”

The development proposal also includes a road between Culm Lea and Riverside Drive to provide access to the new homes.

The state of the nursery has deteriorated significantly in the past decade, and planners have stated that “considerable investment” would be required to return the greenhouses to working use.
