A 12-year-old girl remains in a critical condition in Frenchay Hospital after being hit by a vehicle in Newton Abbott.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the girl was involved in a collision with a car on Tuesday, December 17, on Highweek Street..

The girl, who is a pupil at Newton Abbot College, was walking from the school when the collision happened.

She was taken by air ambulance to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth but was later transferred to Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.

She is in a critical but stable condition after suffering a head injury.

The car involved was a grey/blue BMW 323i from the Exeter area and was driven by 69-year-old woman. The driver is not thought to have been injured.

The collision was witnessed by passersby including school pupils and the school will be putting in place welfare support for those affected by the incident.

The road was closed for an hour while investigators were at the scene.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers are investigating the cause of the collision and have spoken to a number of witnesses already, but if anyone else witnessed this incident please get in touch.”
