Wellington medical centre apologises for flu clinic error
1:00pm Saturday 12th October 2013 in News
BOSSES at Wellington Medical Centre have apologised after dozens of patients were left waiting for flu jabs.
More patients turned up at the centre on Saturday than expected, leaving many elderly people queuing up for their injections.
Staff blamed an administrative error for the confusion, which resulted in patients turning up earlier than anticipated.
Practice manager Lydia Daniel-Baker said: “I would like to apologise to our patients and to the residents of Wellington for the difficulties caused by the flu clinic held on Saturday.
“Due to an administrative error in setting up the appointment system, more patients were booked in for appointments than we had anticipated.
“This error has been rectified for future clinics.
“Patients turning up for their appointments well in advance of their times added to the difficulties on the day, along with the number of people who arrived by car.
“To assist with the smooth running of future flu clinics, can I take this opportunity to ask patients to arrive at their allocated appointment time rather than come early.
“And please remember that parking on site is very limited, so you may like to consider walking to your appointment or parking elsewhere.”
The flu vaccination is offered to people in at-risk groups. These people are at greater risk of developing serious complications if they catch flu, such as pregnant women and elderly people.
Protection from the vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains change over time. New vaccines are made each year and people at risk of flu are encouraged to be vaccinated every year.
A new annual nasal spray flu vaccine was introduced last month and is now on offer to all children aged two and three.
The flu vaccination programme continues into December and the centre is open Monday to Friday between 8.30am and 6pm. For more information visit www.well ingtonmedicalcentre.co.uk
