Plymouth's oldest car park closed over structural problems

Plymouth’s Mayflower West car park is being closed as a precautionary measure after structural problems were discovered during survey work.
The survey, commissioned as part of investigations into the long-term options for the car park, has found more significant deterioration than predicted.
A city council spokesman said the car park was closed as a safety precaution, "while further investigations take place to fully assess the extent of the damage".
Constructed in 1965, Mayflower West is the oldest major car park in the city centre. It underwent major strengthening works in 2004 and regular inspections have been taking place to monitor its condition. Officers were looking to present long-term options and recommendations for the car park in December.
Signs are being put up on access roads to the car park directing drivers to nearby alternatives, which include: the 1,094-space Western Approach car park, which is cheaper than others in the city centre, the 290-space Mayflower East car park, the 612-space Theatre Royal car park and the Park and Ride bus from Milehouse.
A council spokesman said: "We are sorry for the disruption and inconvenience this closure will cause but public safety must be our number one priority. Work to establish the extent of the problems will be carried out as quickly as possible and the public will be updated on progress."
