6:00pm Sunday 18th August 2013 in News
GRASS roots sport clubs in Mid Devon have received a major boost after securing a healthy slice of £1.6million of investment from Sport England.
Sport England has released the money from its Inspired Facilities Olympic and Paralympic legacy fund a year after the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
Mid Devon District Council is to receive £87,000 to fund improvements to facilities, from new playing fields to floodlights and better changing rooms.
Sport England chair Nick Bitel said: “A year on from the Olympics it’s inspiring to see our investment transforming sporting facilities in hundreds of communities.
“The great news for sports clubs across the country is that we’re putting an extra £40million into Inspired Facilities so many more projects will benefit in the coming years.”
Minister for Sport Hugh Robertson said: “This £40million injection of National Lottery funding will be a huge boost to local sports facilities across the country.
“Coming a year on from hosting the London Games it demonstrates our commitment to a tangible and longlasting sports legacy.
“The Inspired Facilities fund has been a massive success, and by extending it to 2017 it will help encourage many more people to get involved in community sport.”
In the two years since Inspired Facilities was launched 1,361 sports facilities have been improved with a total of £69.9million invested.
This week, many of those facilities in the area are offering free sports sessions to local people to celebrate the National Lottery backing they have received from Sport England.
In total, 38 sports groups up and down the country are receiving financial support from Sport England.
Bids will be accepted for the next round of Inspired Facilities funding from October 21 – for more information visit www.sportengland.org/ inspiredfacilities
