WOMEN are living longer, but as we get older our bones get weaker.

Osteoporosis affects one in three post-menopausal women, and a fracture after a trauma is often the only indication of an underlying problem, which is why it is called the ‘silent disease’.

Victims may suffer from deformity, pain, loss of independence and even premature death.

Three out of ten women who suffer an osteoporotic hip fracture will die as a result.

Osteoporosis can be prevented if weak bones are detected early enough, but scans for assessing the risk of future osteoporotic fracture are not always readily available on the NHS.

However, a scan will be available on Tuesday, November 20, at Minehead Baptist Church from 9am to 12pm, on Wednesday, November 21, at Wellington Town Council Offices, from 9am to 1pm, and at Taunton’s St James’ Church hall from 2pm to 6pm. The cost is £26.
