National coffee chain pulls out of Totnes after furious response

A national coffee chain has reportedly backed away from plans to open a branch in Totnes after campaign by locals.

South Hams District Council had given Costa Coffee the green light to open on Fore Street, Totnes.

The town has over 40 independant coffee shops and has built a reputation as an 'alternative lifestyle' centre, with a large population of artists.

Chris Rogers, MD of Costa, said the company "recognised the strength of feeling" in the town and that it had taken into account the specific circumstances of Totnes.

The news has been welcomed by campaign group No to Costa, Dr Sarah Wollaston, the MP for Totnes, and Pruw Boswell, Mayor of Totnes.

In a letter, Dr Wollaston and Ms Boswell said: "As your MP and Mayor, and speaking on behalf of the people of Totnes, we would like to thank Costa for being prepared to listen to our concerns and showing that they care."
