ELLIOT MINOR: SOLARIS (Repossession): After their debut album reached the top ten and a highly successful 2008 and 2009 so far, great things are expected of Elliot Minor’s second album due out on November 16.
The band has had two headline UK and European tours and gone down a treat at festivals while another tour is under way with dates right through to December 6.
The classically trained indie quintet from York has a sound much of its own, while also sounding like a number of other bands in between, if you get it – bands such as Muse and Busted spring to mind, but not for long because the lads have their pop-rock sound to please the teenage fanbase. And its good that their sound, heavy with classical strings and excellent harmonies, blending with the bread and butter of a rock band, shows no signs yet of moving away from its beginnings. There are also some fantastic guitar solos slotted in creating a much better rock feel than on the first album.
Songwriter Alex Davies does a great job with the tracks and his voice is also in good shape and he and Ed Minton are both in excellent form with the guitar.
Of the tracks, the two opening songs The Dancer and I Believe both blend strings and guitar to perfection, and single Electric High has a great hook line.
But the standout tracks are the title song Solaris and Shiver, both of which will probably make good singles and boost album sales. All Along is also worthy of a mention as an excellent Coldplayesque pop song which will catch you in its spell.
The album was recorded in April in Lincoln and York and is a mature leap forward for the band, with good songwriting, production and a better effort all-round which should do even better than the first album.
TRACKS: The Dancer, I Believe, Electric High, Coming Home, Carry On, Solaris, Better Than the Courtroom, All Along, Discover (Why the Love Hurts), Shiver, Tethered, Let’s Turn this Back Around.
