Major new art event attracts record number of artists

ALMOST 600 Devon artists will be exhibiting their work in the largest Open Studios event ever to be held in the county during September.

Devon Art Works is the flagship project of Devon Artists Network, an artists' membership organisation and brings together artists from across Devon to showcase their work in this landmark new event.

Devon Art Works follows on from the highly successful Nine Days of Art events that were held between 2000 and 2006 in various parts of the county, but this is the first time studios across Devon will be open simultaneously.

It is estimated the high profile event will attract upwards of 35,000 visitors over its two week duration and generate over £200,000 in sales adding considerably to the value of the creative economy of the area.

Devon Art Works (DAW) features both established artists and those in the early stages of their careers working across a broad spectrum including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, glass work, photography, metalwork, textiles, jewellery, wood carving and collage as well as digital work, multimedia, sound art and installations.

To encourage new talent, DAW in conjunction with Devon Artsculture offered a number of bursaries to emerging artists to enable them to take part in the event. For some, this will be their first exhibiting opportunity and an important first step towards life as a professional artist. Illustrator Cara Roxanne said: "I feel very fortunate to have received a bursary from Devon Art Works which has given me the opportunity to show my work for the first time during the Open Studios event. The past three months have been an exciting time for me as I have been working on a new series of illustrations to exhibit based on the Siberian Myth The Deer Woman and the Velvet Antlered Moon."

This being Devon it's not just Open Studios people will be able to visit. Work is being shown in a whole variety of places including farms, fields, sheds, gardens and village halls as well as in artists' homes.

A catalogue with full details of participating artists and venues is available from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, galleries, arts venues and local council offices.
